Thanks for a great December meeting. Sorry we can't fellowship over the usual meal of vegetarian chili, mulled sweet cider and seasonal desserts. Perhaps in Second Semester!!

As discussed, I will create discussion threads for each of the White Pine books and for those who requested it, I have added you as editors on this blog. Please check your ugcloud email for the invitation.

Our next meeting will be January 5.

To Think About: 1. Lou, despite facing many challenges in her life, draws on those around her to find strength and joy. Who are these people and how do they support her? Here are some things that we could discuss at our meeting: 1. In what ways does the Chicago World's Fair of 1893 change America? What lasting inventions and ideas did it introduce into American culture? What important figures were critically influenced by the Fair? 2. At the end of the book, Larson suggests that, "exactly what motivated Holmes may never be known" (395). What possible motives are exposed in the story? Why is it important to try to understand the motives a person like Holmes? 3. In what ways is The Devil in the White City like a novel? 4. What is the essential difference between men like Daniel Burnham and Henry H. Holmes? Are they alike in any way?
