Blood Like Magic

Some Things to Think About...

1. The novel starts and centres itself around a coming of age ritual. How does this ritual compare to ones that you may celebrate or members of your community celebrate? What is the purpose of these types of rituals?

2. There is a rating system that is used in Voya’s time period where random strangers can comment and give a numerical score to others that effect how others perceive them. What sort of mechanisms exist like this in our current time? Can you imagine them evolving into something like Voya’s?

3. Voya notes “Magic is a patch we’re using to hide how broken we are.” What broken pieces do you think Voya’s family is hiding? Why might they choose to hide them instead of confront or repair them?
