First Meeting of the New School Year! Woohoo! Thanks for a great meeting. It was wonderful to meet so many new members and to get reacquainted with our core group from last year. I'm really looking forward to having some lively and interesting discussion with other people who love to read. Since we already have a set, I'm going to include the first book of the Bright Empires series, The Skin Map as one of our Sept/October reads. Two other suggestions for alternate reality titles came in today as well and I am investigating getting copies from the public library and other schools. They are Ysabel  by Guy Gavriel Kay, and Afterworlds , by Scott Westerfeld. I'll announce when the books are ready for pick up next week, so be sure to listen to the morning announcements. Our next meeting is Thursday, October 22. Check out these book trailers (You may need to reload the page to get some of the trailers to show up) The Skin Map Link to a review Afterworlds Link to a review Y...

Thanks to everyone who took time from their busy lunch break to come out and share your views on the White Pine books we've read to date. Congratulations to Ameena, Meghan and Kyle for getting a jump on the 5-book minimum for White Pine: enjoy your leather-bound journals. Copies of all White Pine books are together in one handy spot over by the comfy chairs. Next meeting, Thursday, February 19. See you in the Library!

The Devil in the White City - Discussion Questions

Here are some things that we could discuss at our meeting: 1. In what ways does the Chicago World's Fair of 1893 change America? What lasting inventions and ideas did it introduce into American culture? What important figures were critically influenced by the Fair? 2. At the end of the book, Larson suggests that, "exactly what motivated Holmes may never be known" (395). What possible motives are exposed in the story? Why is it important to try to understand the motives a person like Holmes? 3. In what ways is The Devil in the White City like a novel? 4. What is the essential difference between men like Daniel Burnham and Henry H. Holmes? Are they alike in any way?

EDHS Book Club Meeting, Thursday, October 30, 2014

Just a reminder that we will be meeting at lunch in the Library Seminar Room to discuss The Devil in the White City. Bring your lunch. Dessert and drinks will be provided. See you in the Library!
